Spotted: Touring the Carrizo Plain - The Book!

I’m super excited to announce that I put together my first photo book of bike touring images. The images may look familiar to regular readers. All these photos are from our bike tour from Paso Robles to Ventura, CA via the Carrizo Plain. Carrizo is one of the most remote areas in California with dramatic vistas of - nothing. On the trip we had to carry food for several days and about two gallons of water.

The book itself is printed and distributed through Blurb. The book size is 7×7 inches. I love the square format for photo books and this size is just the right size. It’s small enough to take everywhere (fits in your Acorn handlebar bag no problem) or hide on your desk at the office. I’ve had different photo books made and I’m really pleased with the quality of the Blurb books. You can get a softcover copy for about $20 and the hardcover options go up from there.

As far as photo books about bike touring - there really isn’t any. Outside of the fine folks at Adventure Cycling, there isn’t a publication with great color photos of bicycle touring (you’re NOT going to see in Bicycling that’s for sure)!

For photographers and connoisseurs of photo books, one really great feature of the book is that the book is actually a photo essay. There’s a narrative to the images (and some text) and you follow my friends and myself through the trip. It’s not just a collection of singles, but a group of images that build on each other. Needless to say, the sales of the book (not making a windfall here) will go towards our Big Trip. They make great gifts (they’re small so you should buy two), for the bike tourist who has everything (chances are they don’t have this-YET!).
You can order a copy here.

I too have considered making a blurb book from photos of some of my tours. It seemed like it would be fun so I’m now a little jealous and at the same time inspired by yours. It looks great.
